Worried about your Smartphone getting pirated? Shiver Me Timbers!

Smartphone

When you are out and about, do you ever worry about your smartphone getting pirated by hackers?

Your computer gets viruses, have you ever thought that your phone or tablet might get a virus?

There were more attacks in 2010 on mobile devices by people downloading what they thought were legitimate apps. But users were tricked into downloading malicious apps by hackers using various techniques to get them to click on questionable links.

There are some good apps out there though that will help you protect your phone or tablet computer. F-Secure the currently top rated Antivirus program makers have a couple of apps for you. One is an Antivirus scanner for mobile devices and the other will help you Lock or Find your phone if it is lost or stolen. And if you don’t think you will get it back, the app will even let you remotely erase all your personal information stored on the phone. The phone finding feature is free to use, but if you want to use their Mobile Antivirus app, there is a monthly fee.

Do you know of any great security apps?

Have you ever been hacked? Doesn’t it make you just want to scream?

Click this link for the free app. and don’t worry about getting pirated any more!

Pass the word, all you Geeks!

1. If you travel with your ATT cell phone and go Roaming onto a different
network your voicemail may not work, especially if you turn off your phone.
Example: My client went on a Cruise Ship and the Cruise companies have
thier own network to forward your calls to the ship. But they charge you a
very high price to recieve calls or texts, so my client turned off the Iphone.
Anyone who called could not leave a voicemail, you can not even reach the
voicemail system, just get a message saying to call back later.
So no voicemail for a week.
I do not know if this is the same with other phone companies.
Before you travel or go off network, make sure you have a way
to get emergency messages in case your voicemail does not work.

2. Using Keyboard shortcuts can sometimes let you do things much quicker
than using a mouse. Here are some lists of keyboard shortcuts. Memorize
your favorites and maybe print the lists for reference.
The last one includes shortcuts for Mac OSX too.

3. .Here are some DFW area locations where you can drop off used batteries
and ink cartridges to recycle, or get your cell phone fixed.

1. If a file does not open in the correct program when you click on it, you
can select a different program to use. Hold down the shift key and Right click
on the file you want to open. Select “Open with” then “Choose Program”.
Select the program you want to use from the list or choose “Browse”.
After selecting the program you want to use, make sure to check the box
that says “Always use the selected program” then click OK.

2. If you know someone who likes to send “Text” messages while driving,
These software apps will help them keep their eyes on the road. One let’s
them dictate a text message and the other sends an auto-response when
they recieve a Text. www.zoomsafer.com and www.Aegismobility.com

3. You can get a different cell phone without having to extend your contract
by purchasing from a 3rd party online store, and even find Unlocked phones
sold at Fry’s Electronics. You will have to pay full price for a new phone though.
When buying one make sure it is designed to work on your providers network.
An Unlocked phone will not necessarily work on every network, you must verify.

4. People have asked about getting notices to update programs and which
ones are safe to do. Some updates especially for hardware drivers are best
not to do unless you really know what you are doing. But the following are
usually safe to click OK when you get the notice. Quicken, Quickbooks,
Adobe Reader, Java, Flash Player, Shockwave, Quicktime, Windows Updates.

Hope those tips are helpful. Many people do not know that “Geek On The Go” not only does computer repairs and installation but also helps people with their TV, Stereo, Digital Camera, Cell Phone, and other electronics needs.

1. I have now setup 3 new computers with Windows 7 and it
seems to work smoothly and very much better than Windows Vista.
The only minor problem I have found is when you change settings
in the Control Panel it sometimes hangs up for a minute but
then fixes itself and all is fine. That is the only problem I have found
so far, and am sure they will get a patch out for it shortly.
Overall I would recommend upgrading from Vista.

2. Important Safety Recall on laptop batteries from HP/Compaq.
Go to this site to see if your battery is affected.
www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement

3. HP/Compaq also has a Consumer Buyback and recycling program
where they will pay you for all kinds of electronic equipment.
Local computer and office supply stores will take some equipment
but usually want to charge you $5 or so for handling.
